Wigan? Wolves? Who better to put this match into perspective than Wilde, as in Oscar, the playwright, wit and sodomite of a more elegant, bygone age: ‘To break one leg, Mr Karl Henry, may be regarded as a misfortune. To break both looks like carelessness.’
Not Karl’s own legs, you understand, but those of opposition players. When the Wolves captain put Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez into orbit, we at Fantasy F**wit naturally assumed that, after busting Bobby Zamora’s flipper last month, Karl was on some sort of weird bonus scheme. In addition Henry got his marching orders and F**wit points. Not even his manager, Mick McCarthy, could adopt an air of wounded innocence on this one.
Luckily, Gomez was OK, going on to harvest two f**wit points for a glaring miss just before half time by missing a header from four yards.
Wolves centre-back Christophe Berra earned three points: one for a booking and a pair for his supporting role in Hugo Rodallega’s goal. First, with a studied nonchalance that put us in mind of Cary Grant, he failed to track the Wigan striker’s run. Then, switching dramatic styles to mid-period Norman Wisdom, in his effort to get back and clear he whacked the ball straight at Rodallega then watched in gormless horror as it catapulted into the net. Ooooh, Mr Grimsdale!
Rodallega himself also acquired a couple of points himself for missing decent chances and could have had a hat-trick.
The Most Disappointing Player? Wolves’ Kevin Doyle who seemed to lose the will to live, never mind play a game of football, as soon as his captain was sent off.
